The state House has approved State Rep. Jaime Thompson’s bipartisan plan to improve menopause education in Michigan by expanding education and awareness around women’s midlife health. The plan ensures physicians have the option to complete continuing education focused on so their patients can better understand symptoms, treatment options, and related health conditions.
“Navigating this stage of my life while raising my three grandchildren has been challenging and sometimes confusing, and I know I’m not alone. Too many women feel dismissed or unsupported when they seek help for menopause-related symptoms,” Thompson said. “This plan helps ensure physicians have better tools to recognize and treat those symptoms while ensuring women have access to reliable information about what their bodies are going through.”
Under the plan, the state’s medical licensing boards would ensure physicians can complete a continuing education course on women’s midlife health as part of their existing training requirements. The course would include information on communication with patients and the management of menopause symptoms and related chronic conditions. Physicians would not be required to complete the course, but the plan ensures the option is available and encourages participation.
Another bill tied to Thompson’s directs the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to develop and promote a menopause awareness program in consultation with medical professionals and women’s health organizations. The program would provide information about common symptoms, related health conditions, screening options, and available treatments.
“Menopause is a natural stage of life for every woman. They shouldn’t have to navigate it in the dark or without good information or informed care,” Thompson said. “By improving education for physicians and sharing clear information with the public, we can help women get the support and treatment they need.”
House Bills 4790 and 4791 now move to the Senate for consideration.
