State Rep. Matthew Bierlein today announced his office is launching an essay contest for local fourth-grade students, encouraging young Michiganders to learn about the state government process and share their ideas for making a positive difference in their communities.
Fourth-grade students within Michigan’s 97th House District are invited to participate. The 97th House District encompasses several communities in Bay, Genesee, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. The district includes Freeland, the cities of Auburn, Caro, Frankenmuth and Vassar, part of Montrose, and the villages of Birch Run and Millington. A full map can be found here.
Essays must address the question: “If you were a state representative, what would you do to leave a positive impact for the State of Michigan?” All submissions must be 250 words or less, or one page double-spaced.
“This contest is a great way for students to start thinking about how government works and the role they can play in shaping their communities,” said Bierlein (R-Vassar). “Young people often have thoughtful and creative ideas about what they would like to see for the future of our state. Giving them an opportunity to share those ideas helps spark an early interest in civic engagement and public service.”
Multiple winners will be selected following the 5 p.m. deadline on Friday, March 20. Prizes include a personal state tribute addressed to winning writers and a pizza party for their class. The essay will also be featured in a future press release distributed to news publications across the area, showcasing what Michigan’s future generations feel is in the best interests of residents and communities.
“I look forward to reading the submissions and encourage parents across our region to have their fourth-grade students participate,” Bierlein said.
