State Rep. Graham Filler today led the Michigan House in approving a plan to help Michigan airports crack down on suspected drug traffickers.

Filler, of DeWitt, said drug traffickers have exploited reforms made to Michigan’s civil asset forfeiture process in 2019 that leave airport authorities unable to seize their assets.

“We’re making this change to send a clear message to drug traffickers that Michigan is not open for business,” Filler said. “Airport security officers have my full support, and I want to make sure they have the tools they need to keep drugs and drug money out of our state.”

House Bills 4631-32 would allow airport authorities to execute the civil asset forfeiture process without first obtaining a conviction or plea if the property or currency relating to a drug offense exceed $20,000. A civil judgement would still have to be obtained.

The bills received overwhelming bipartisan support in the House and now advance to the Senate for further consideration.
