State Rep. Mike Mueller (R-Linden) today voted for a shutdown prevention plan which would provide funding for essential services such as police, prison facilities, schools, and local emergency services. House Bills 4161 and 4162 would provide funding to these services in the event of a government shutdown if a full budget could not be agreed upon before the deadline.
“Regardless of what’s happening in Lansing, it’s imperative that we continue to fund education and public safety after October 1st,” Mueller said. “Keeping our communities safe and our schools funded shouldn’t be contingent on Lansing politics.”
The supplemental appropriations package also includes funding for veterans’ homes and local government revenue-sharing payments to fund operations like police, fire, and emergency medical services. These critical operations would remain fully funded into the next fiscal year if a full budget were not agreed upon by the deadline.
The shutdown prevention plan also includes continued funding for schools. School safety, mental health programs, special education services, and teacher retirement payments would remain fully funded. The package would also increase the per-pupil foundation allowance to $10,025.
“Our children should always be our first priority when we vote,” Mueller said. “I’m proud to have voted for increasing per-pupil funding to every school. No matter what happens at the state-level, teachers and parents should be able to rest assured that our schools will remain fully funded and fully operational.”
Both bills passed the House on Thursday afternoon. Rep. Mueller’s office can be reached by phone at (517) 373-0840 or by email at [email protected].
