State Rep. Ron Robinson today secured House approval of a major affordability package focused on lowering property taxes, cutting utility costs, and making homeownership more attainable.

“Families are feeling the pressure of rising costs from every direction,” said Robinson (R-Utica). “Gas and groceries cost more. Energy bills continue to rise. Insurance and health care costs keep climbing. People, especially our youngest generations, are doing everything right and still can’t get ahead. Something’s gotta give.”

The package would reduce costs for homeowners and future homebuyers by eliminating the state portion of property taxes and rolling back utility rates by $1 billion statewide, effectively wiping out the last three years of rate hikes. Overall, the plan is expected to save the average Michigan family approximately $1,400 per year through lower property taxes and energy bills.

“I hear it every day, people need relief,” Robinson said. “Families should not feel like they’re being squeezed from every direction just to get by. We’re working to change that.”

The package includes Robinson’s plan to eliminate Michigan’s real estate transfer tax, cutting a costly fee paid at closing and saving families thousands of dollars in upfront costs.

“At a time when housing is one of the top issues facing Michigan residents, the state should be removing barriers to homeownership,” said Robinson. “My plan takes thousands of dollars in unnecessary costs off the table and gives working families, first-time homebuyers, and seniors more financial breathing room.”

Additional bills in the package would bring further relief by eliminating the pop-up tax and personal property taxes on business equipment.

The bills now advance to the Senate for consideration.
