State Rep. Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) today introduced a bill aimed at increasing education in water safety for youth. House Bill 4477 would require the Department of Education to create a proposed water safety program for school children. The curriculum would include proper uses of flotation devices, importance of supervision, and different swimming techniques.
“We live in a state surrounded by water in nearly every direction,” Steele said. “It’s vital to the welfare of our children that we teach them how to stay safe and be responsible in our lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools.”
House Bill 4477 has been referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce and is awaiting a hearing. Steele said she hopes her fellow legislators will unite behind the plan.
“Collaborating to educate our kids and prioritize their safety should be a non-partisan issue,” Steele said. “I invite all my colleagues to join me in supporting this legislation.”
